Advanced Musical Scoring Techniques

An examination and practical outworking of the production of professional music notation using computer software. Includes an investigation of the music publishing process through a series of outcome-based tutorials using specialised music notation software. Topics examined may include (but are not limited to) note entry methods, notational rules, page layout, industry publishing conventions, creating parts from scores, alternative notation and exporting/importing files. Emphasis is particularly placed on notational accuracy, style consistancy, data entry efficiency and a solid grounding in traditional music notation conventions. (Students will be required to have access to an approved music publishing software package in order to complete assessment tasks.)

Objectives By the end of this course , students will be expected to:

1. demonstrate advanced skills using music publishing software;
2. demonstrate an understanding of professional music publishing practices;
3. demonstrate an ability to produce advanced musical notation and use appropriate page layout;
4. demonstrate an understanding of the different approaches of music publishing software;
5. demonstrate the ability to use email, access web-based resources and to participate in electronic discussion groups.
Content Topics may include (but are not limited to) note entry methods, notational rules, page layout, industry publishing conventions, creating parts from scores, alternative notation and exporting/importing files. Emphasis is also placed on notational accuracy, style consistancy, data entry efficiency and a solid grounding in traditional music notation conventions. Additional study areas may include lyrics, chords, and advanced notational scoring (for example, 20th century scoring).
Replacing Course(s) This course replaces no existing courses. No courses offered within the University provides a similar focus on Music Technology applications at postgraduate level. This course will have no impact on other Faculties or Schools.

Assumed Knowledge Students undertaking this course are required to have minimum levels of computer literacy and musical ability as necessary for entry into the Master of Music Technology and Graduate Certificate in Music Technology programs. (This course requires a good comprehension of music notation.) No additional assumed knowledge is required. (Further details of the levels expected are available from the program convener.)

Assessment Items
Group/tutorial participation and contribution Assessment Item #4 (10% of total assessment) - Students will need to provide evidence of online class participation and activities from throughout the duration of the trimester. The summary should include evidence about the frequency, content and relevancy of their online contributions. This may include information from discussion forms, virtual chats sessions, email communication, etc.
Other: (please specify) Assessment Item #2 (30% of total assessment) - Students will apply their knowledge of music notation publishing to produce notational score excerpt(s) of moderate complexity. This may include a variety of notational styles. More advanced features of the chosen music publishing software will be required in addition to a more discerning eye for accuracy. Music notation files will be submitted for assessment with support documentation (if required).
Other: (please specify) Assessment Item #1 (30% of total assessment) - This task requires the student to examine a number of music note entry methods using their chosen music publishing software and to assess the various characteristics. Students may also be required to create excerpt(s) of music notation. Music notation files will be submitted for assessment with support documentation (if required).
Other: (please specify) Assessment Item #3 (30% of total assessment) - Students will expand their knowledge of music notation publishing by producing score excerpt(s) of a more advanced nature. This will combine many of the skills already learnt and present new challenges. Styles of notation produced may include (for example) 20th century scoring and popular music notation. Music notation files will be submitted for assessment with support documentation (if required).
