MIDI and Sequencing Techniques

The principles of arranging and editing music in electronic forms are studied and practically applied. Using sequencing software, Music Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) information is examined in detail. In particular, MIDI signal flow (including synchronisation), MIDI processing and the fundamentals of MIDI data (including binary theory) are addressed. Particular emphasis is placed on obtaining and maintaining musicality while utilising manipulation techniques. Sequencing and arrangement methodology is also examined. (Students will be required to have access to an approved music sequencing software package in order to complete assessment tasks.)

Objectives By the end of this course, students will be expected to:

1. demonstrate advanced operational skills using music arrangement software;
2. demonstrate a practical understanding of the procedures used in arranging musical material while maintaining musicality;
3. demonstrate a knowledge of the varied applications of sequencing software and Musical Instrument Digital Interface and the associated ramifications of their use;
4. demonstrate an understanding of the different editing techniques used in music arrangement software;
5. demonstrate the ability to use email, access web-based resources and to participate in electronic discussion groups.
Content Topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Hardware related skills - configuring sequencers, local control, MIDI generating devices, MIDI sound sources
- Software related skills - configuring MIDI and audio drivers, use of the Internet and email, editors, file formats
- Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) - configuring MIDI, comparisons between MIDI and audio, MIDI signal flow, analysis of MIDI data messages.
Additional study areas may include synchronisation and using MIDI beyond the immediate realm of music
Replacing Course(s) This course replaces no existing courses. No courses offered within the University provides a similar focus on Music Technology applications at postgraduate level. This course will have no impact on other Faculties or Schools.

Assumed Knowledge Students undertaking this course are required to have minimum levels of computer literacy and musical ability as necessary for entry into the Master of Music Technology and Graduate Certificate in Music Technology programs. No additional assumed knowledge is required. (Further details of the levels expected are available from the program convener.)

Assessment Items
Group/tutorial participation and contribution Assessment Item #4 (10% of total assessment) - Students will need to provide evidence of online class participation and activities from throughout the duration of the trimester. The summary should include evidence about the frequency, content and relevancy of their online contributions. This may include information from discussion forms, virtual chats sessions, email communication, etc.
Other: (please specify) Assessment Item #1 (30% of total assessment) - Students will utilise electronic resources (such as music sequencing software) to examine Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) in detail. They will be required to undertake research, testing and experimentation to address fundamental conceptual uses of MIDI and its operation. A report and support material (if required) of their work will be submitted.
Other: (please specify) Assessment Item #2 (30% of total assessment) - Students will be required to demonstrate their use of specific features of sequencing software by undertaking music arrangement tasks. This may include modifying music using a variety of editing methods. They should be able to demonstrate their ability to competently use a sequencing software package. Music material will be submitted for assessment (accompanied by support documentation, if required.)
Other: (please specify) Assessment Item #3 (30% of total assessment) - Students will need to utilise a variety of music editing skills to manipulate and arrange musical data using computer software. They will need to demonstrate an advanced understanding of a music sequencing package, a sophisticated knowledge of MIDI, and the ability to edit/arrange data in a musical fashion. This task may include arranging musical material to another digital medium (such as an excerpt of video). Musical material will be submitted for assessment (accompanied by support documentation, if required.)
