Diagnostic Radiography Professional Practice IIIA

This course allows students to refine their basic to advanced professional skills, by attending a professional placement at an accredited clinical centre. The professional placement will increase confidence and competence in undertaking and participating in professional procedures of increasing difficulty or complexity. Clinical placement occurs during Semester 1 for five weeks. This course is mandatory and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Diagnostic Radiography) course.

Objectives A Faculty Clinical Handbook, Diagnostic Radiography clinical handbook, and Clinical Accreditation Record (CAR) have been developed. These handbook's together are used by both students and clinical centers to become familiar with policies, procedures and student learning objectives.

A student should:
1. observe and identify the role and function of medical radiation practitioners and health care team members in the delivery of health care
2. continue to apply and participate in MRS procedures at a level suitable to their current clinical experience
3. continue to develop and demonstrate a professional attitude towards members of the public and other health care workers
4. further develop clinical reasoning skills
5. further develop and apply communication skills with members of the public and other health care workers
6. practice within an ethical and legal framework
7. be able to evaluate and critique his or her role within and during the clinical practice according to the level of experience
8. be able to describe the current and future roles that may be required to practice within and reflect on the need for continual learning to improve clinical practice
9. summarise their clinical learning over the entire clinical program
Content This course is fully integrated with MRSC3100. Diagnostic radiography students in Year 3 are expected to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes towards clinical practice and procedure at a level commensurate with their professional development as outlined in MRSC3100.

Replacing Course(s) This course replaces MRSC3400 for BMedRadSci (Diagnostic Radiography) students.
Transition BMedRadSci (Diagnostic Radiography) students who fail MRSC3400 in 2006 will enrol in MRSC3110 in 2007.

In order to pass this course students must
a. Gain an average mark of 50% or above
AND
b. Gain a minimum mark of 40% in every individual assessment task.
Reports Completion of all parts of the professional placement workbook. The workbook outlines the work to be completed during the Professional Placement and includes:
1. Written Reports:
Technology Assessment, Procedure Studies, Patient Assessment, Case Study Reports, Case Study Procedure Reports Clinical Activity Sheets, Clinical Skills Assessment Sheets, Reflective Journal, diary or narrative, and clinical skills reflective table. The actual type and number of reports to be completed or that can be completed each semester vary according to student performance in a previous clinical or as a results of the type of clinical practice placement undertaken. The profession specific clinical handbook, clinical practice workbook and Clinical Accreditation Record (CAR) will outline the types and numbers of reports required for this course.

2. Clinical Supervisor Reports:
This report assesses the student against a series of skills based and attitudinal indicators. The assessment report contains both formative and summative feedback for the student and university co-ordinator. The assessment is undertaken several times during each clinical practice block.

3. Clinical Competence/Skill Development:
Students must demonstrate satisfactory attainment of profession specific clinical skills by the end of the course.

4. Clinical Contact:
Satisfactory completion of the clinical contact hours/shifts for the semester and attendance at clinical briefings and debriefings.

Compulsory Program Component To undertake this course and be able to attend clinical education placement and to comply with the various state and territory Radiation Safety Acts, students must have successfully completed, or be currently enrolled in and meeting course requirements for MRSC3100 and MRSC3110. The student must have successfully completed MRSC1110, MRSC1100, MRSC2100, MRSC2110, MRSC2150, MRSC2160.
