Radiation Therapy Professional Practice IIB

This course provides students with the opportunity to further develop professional knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience, by participating in professional skill labs at university and by attending a professional placement at an accredited radiation therapy clinical centre. The labs and professional placement will increase confidence and competence in undertaking and participating in professional procedures of increasing difficulty or complexity. The labs must be passed to be allowed to attend professional placement, and pass the course.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and must be passed in order to progress in the Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Radiation Therapy).

Objectives Students who successfully complete this course should be able to:
1. demonstrate competence in the design and quality assurance checking of mid level complexity treatment plans, and implementation of plans
2. evaluate plans against ICRU criteria and ensure that they meet recognised and accepted criteria (ICRU 50/62)
3. apply and participate in mid level complexity radiation therapy treatment, planning and simulation procedures at a level suitable to their current clinical experience
4. demonstrate effective communication with members of the public and other health care workers, such as information gathering, active listening and empathy
5. practice within an ethical and legal framework
6. demonstrate clinical reasoning / management
7. apply the skills and knowledge necessary to employ an evidenced based approach to decision making in healthcare practice
8. reflect upon, and evaluate and critique his or her role within and during the clinical period
Content 1. Conventional and Conformal Radiation Therapy in simulation, treatment and planning
2. Radiation Therapy of the Pelvis
3. Radiation Therapy of the Breast
4. ICRU Report 50 and Report 62 - Prescribing, Reporting and Recording External Beam Therapy
5. 2D and 3D planning dosing techniques and plan evaluation including visual assessment, statistical assessment, dose volume histogram assessment, biological models of dosing
6. Patient assessment with regard to quality of life, living with illness, and treatment toxicity criteria
7. QA and auditing in Radiation Therapy

This assessment item must be passed to be allowed to attend Professional Placement, and to pass the course.

- Students must meet the attendance requirements for professional placement(professional practice)
- In order to pass the course, a student must obtain the following grades in the Final Summative Assessment:
- A minimum of '3' (satisfactory level of achievement) in each item listed in section 1-4 of the report.
- An 'S' (satisfactory level of achievement) in each item listed in section 5, "Professionalism".
Reports Professional Placement Workbook
Completion of all parts of the Professional Placement Workbook. The Workbook outlines the work to be completed during the Professional Placement and includes:

1. Written Reports
2. Clinical Skills/Competence Evaluation
3. Clinical Supervisor Reports
4. Clinical Contact
Contact Hours Clinical: for 1 hour(s) per Week for 2 weeks
Clinical: for 200 hour(s) per Term for Full Term
