Description
This course provides students with the opportunity to further develop professional knowledge, experience and competence, in conventional and conformal low to medium level clinical procedures, by participating in professional skill labs at University and by attending a professional placement at an accredited radiation therapy clinical centre. The labs must be passed to be allowed to attend professional placement, and pass the course. This course is mandatory and must be passed in order to progress in the Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Radiation Therapy) Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Honours) (Radiation Therapy). This Course recognises the Professional Capabilities developed by the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia. The Document 'Professional Capabilities For Medical Radiation Practice' outlines via Domains the requirements for a Competent Practitioner. Domain 1: professional and ethical conduct Domain 2: professional communication and collaboration Domain 3: evidence-based practice and professional learning Domain 4: radiation safety and risk management, and Domain 5: practice in medical radiation science: 5c: practice in radiation therapy.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate competence in the design and quality assurance checking of basic and medium level treatment plans, and implementation of plans into treatment
2. Evaluate plans against ICRU criteria and ensure that they meet recognised and accepted criteria (ICRU 50/62)
3. Participate in basic and medium level radiation therapy treatment, planning and simulation procedures
4. Demonstrate a professional attitude towards members of the public and other health care workers
5. Apply effective communication to members of the public and other health care workers, such as information gathering, active listening and empathy
6. Practice within an ethical and legal framework
7. Develop clinical reasoning / management skills
8. Apply the skills and knowledge necessary to employ an evidenced based approach to decision making in healthcare practice
9. Reflect upon, and evaluate and critique his or her role within and during the clinical period, according to the level of experience
Content
- Isocentric Treatment & Planning
- Conventional and Conformal Radiation Therapy approaches
- ICRU Report 50 and Report 62 - Prescribing, Reporting and Recording External Beam Therapy
- Dosing techniques and plan evaluation including visual assessment, statistical assessment, dose volume histogram assessment, biological models of dosing
- 3 dimensional planning
- Patient assessment with regard to quality of life, living with illness, and treatment toxicity criteria
Review of Progress
This course is a compulsory program requirement and is monitored for academic progress purposes. The course must be completed to progress in the program or meet other program requirements.
Failure or withdrawal from this course will result in students being considered under the Student Academic Progress Procedure.
Requisite
Students must be concurrently enrolled in MRSC2200, have successfully completed MRSC1201 and MRSC1220, and be active in the Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Honours) (Radiation Therapy) [40010] program to enrol in this course.

Compulsory Placement and WHS Requirements:
- NSW Health Verification Requirements - Mandatory NSW Health Verification Requirements must be met. - - Current first aid certificate - NPC National Police Check International Students (additional requirements): Police Certificates from all previous countries of residence Students will be allocated a clinical placement. Students cannot change their clinical placement site due to not being able to demonstrate the above requirements. Any student excluded from placement because they are unable to demonstrate the above requirements will not be able to pass this course and will be given a failed grade (FF) for the course. Any student not able to fulfil the above requirements, or who are unwilling to meet these requirements, need to make an appointment with the course coordinator to discuss their progress in this course and the degree. This course has block placements. The final date that a student may withdraw without penalty from this course is 1 week prior to commencement of placement
