This course provides students with the opportunity to further develop professional knowledge, experience and competence, in conventional and conformal low to medium level clinical procedures, by participating in professional skill labs at University and by attending a professional placement at an accredited radiation therapy clinical centre. The labs must be passed to be allowed to attend professional placement, and pass the course. This course is mandatory and must be passed in order to progress in the Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Radiation Therapy).
This course is a Compulsory Program Component and must be passed in order to progress in the Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Radiation Therapy).
| Objectives |
Students who successfully complete this course should be able to: 1. demonstrate competence in the design and quality assurance checking of basic level treatment plans, and implementation of plans into treatment 2. evaluate plans against ICRU criteria and ensure that they meet recognised and accepted criteria (ICRU 50/62) 3. apply and participate in basic level radiation therapy treatment, planning and simulation procedures 4. demonstrate a professional attitude towards members of the public and other health care workers 5. demonstrate effective communication to members of the public and other health care workers, such as information gathering, active listening and empathy 6. practice within an ethical and legal framework 7. develop clinical reasoning / management skills 8. apply the skills and knowledge necessary to employ an evidenced based approach to decision making in healthcare practice 9. reflect upon, and evaluate and critique his or her role within and during the clinical period, according to the level of experience |

1. Isocentric Treatment & Planning 2. Conventional and Conformal Radiation Therapy approaches 3. ICRU Report 50 and Report 62 - Prescribing, Reporting and Recording External Beam Therapy 4. Dosing techniques and plan evaluation including visual assessment, statistical assessment, dose volume histogram assessment, biological models of dosing 5. 3 dimensional planning 6. Shielding & Templates: Construction & Use 7. Patient assessment with regard to quality of life, living with illness, and treatment toxicity criteria |

Radiation Therapy planning and treatment professional skill lab exercises.
Compulsory Course Component: The Laboratory Exercise and assessments are a Compulsory Course Component, ie you must pass all case submissions (Satisfactory) to pass the course and must attend 100% of the labs. Students who receive less than a satisfactory for all cases and/or who do not attend all laboratories will not meet the compulsory course component requirements for this course and will be given a fail grade (FF) for the course. No opportunity for remediation in the lab exercises will be allowed unless accompanied by the appropriate Adverse Circumstance documentation.

Essential Criteria - Attendance and participation at labs must be assessed as satisfactory (pre-placement competence)
i)Students must pass the pre-placement exam (pre-placement competence)
ii) Students must obtain 50% or more in the Professional Placement Workbook (professional practice)
iii)Students must meet the attendance requirements for professional placement(professional practice) |
| Reports |
Compulsory Course Component : The Professional Placement Workbook and completion of all parts of the workbook are a Compulsory Course Component, ie you must complete and pass all submissions as per the criteria outlined within these to pass the course. Students who receive less than a pass for all areas in the workbook and/or who do not submit the workbook by the due date, will not meet the compulsory course component requirements for this course and will be given a fail grade (FF) for the course. No opportunity for remediation in the lab exercises will be allowed unless accompanied by the appropriate Adverse Circumstance documentation.
Professional Placement Workbook. Completion of all parts of the Professional Placement Workbook. The Workbook outlines the work to be completed during the Professional Placement and includes:
