This course provides students with the opportunity to begin to develop professional knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience, by participating in professional skill labs at university and by attending a professional placement at an accredited radiation therapy clinical centre. The labs and professional placement will increase confidence and competence in undertaking and participating in basic professional procedures. The labs must be passed to be allowed to attend professional placement, and pass the course.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate skills in the design and quality assurance checking of basic level treatment plans, and implementation of plans into treatment

2. Evaluate plans against ICRU criteria and ensure that they meet recognised and accepted criteria (ICRU 50/62

3. Apply and participate in basic level radiation therapy treatment, planning and simulation procedures

4. Demonstrate a professional attitude towards members of the public and other health care workers

5. Demonstrate effective communication to members of the public and other health care workers, such as information gathering, active listening and empathy

6. Practice within an ethical and legal framework

7. Develop clinical reasoning / management skills

8. Apply the skills and knowledge necessary to employ an evidenced based approach to decision making in healthcare practice

9. Reflect upon, and evaluate and critique his or her role within and during the clinical period

10. Observe and identify the role and function of medical radiation practitioners and health care team members in the delivery of health care

11. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of occupational health and safety issues relevant to their profession

12. Demonstrate an ability to perform a physical and pain assessment including written clinical history documentation

13. Identify the signs and symptoms of medical emergencies that may occur in medical imaging or radiation therapy departments and demonstrate actions that may be taken to manage these.


  1. An introduction to radiation therapy professional practice
  2. An introduction to radiation therapy simulation, planning and treatment
  3. An introduction to radiation oncology departments and other service departments
  4. Basic professional skills in planning and treatment
  5. Conventional and conformal radiation therapy approaches
  6. Effective communication, ethical practice
  7. Patient care including occupational health & safety, infection control, aseptic techniques. physical and pain assessment, recording clinical history and responding to medical emergencies.

This course is only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Radiation Therapy) program. Pre-requisite - successful completion of MRSC1010, HLSC1000 and HUBS1105. Co-requisite - concurrent enrolment in MRSC1201

  • NSW Health Verification Requirements - Students must complete NSW Health Department requirements for students to attend placements in NSW Health facilities.
