This course reviews cancer from an Australian perspective. A diagnosis of cancer and cancer treatment can have physical, functional, emotional, social and spiritual effects. This course will explore cancer statistics, causes, screening and diagnosis, and mainstream treatments in Australia. The course will also introduce the concepts of holistic and supportive care for cancer patients, and the quality of life effects of cancer.

Objectives Students who successfully complete this course should be able to:
1. Describe the epidemiology (frequency and distribution) and aetiology (causes) of malignant disease
2. Describe the natural history and staging of malignant disease
3. Describe approaches in oncology screening, diagnosis and treatment
4. Analyse the specialist roles of practitioners in cancer care, and the role of the multi-disciplinary health team in oncology
5. Analyse the dimensions and measurement of quality of life as it relates to oncology patients
6. Analyse the role of supportive care (dental, nutritional, psycho-social) interventions in cancer care
7. Analyse the role of complimentary health approaches in oncology
8. Recognise the importance of self care for staff working in a cancer care setting
9. Demonstrate the ability to write an assignment.
Content The course will contain the following components:
1. Cancer statistics frequency and distribution (epidemiology), survival statistics
2. Causes (aetiology) and Prevention of Cancer
3. Diagnostic methods pathological and imaging
4. Cancer treatment methods surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy
5. Role, function, and scope of members of the oncology team
6. Psychological oncology, dimensions and measures of quality of life
7. Mainstream supportive cancer care and complimentary health care
8. Maintaining a level of self care in the cancer setting
9. Develop an ability to critically analysis journal article findings.
Replacing Course(s) MRSC1200 Radiation Therapy Methods IB. 20 credit points.
