Lectures examine the strategic management theories, business models and ideas underlying strategic management. The more practical aspects of application, implementation and maintenance of strategy and strategic functions within an organisation are explored through case analysis.

Objectives The purpose of the course is to develop an understanding of the theories and practical operation of strategic management and its place in modern managerial frameworks. Students will be introduced to the concepts of strategic positioning as a departure from traditional strategic planning approaches of strategic analysis. The course will critically examine the role of strategic management in the light of emerging environmental and market conditions and continual technological change. It will further study the strategic ramifications of such issues on key organisational activities such as marketing, organisational structures and design, human resource management, and industrial relations.
Content The syllabus will include:

1. Theories of strategic planning, positioning and management;
2. Alternative frameworks of strategic management, strategy formulation, and implementation;
3. The characteristics of business management, information technologies and market environments giving rise to strategic factors;
4. The development of strategic management as an organisational process;
5. Its impact upon other key organisational activities.
