Students will examine contemporary political and cultural issues related to childbearing and maternity care provision. The course encourages students to develop skills in self-awareness and self-nurturing to promote their own health. Skills in effective teamwork and professional development of self and others are discussed. Clinical skills and competency to practise is supported.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Midwifery program

Objectives Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

1. Critically discuss the contemporary political and cultural issues related to childbearing and maternity care provision
2. Describe the barriers for woman from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities being able to access culturally safe maternity care
3. Provide culturally safe care to women and their families from CALD communities
4. Practise self-nurturing strategies to enhance their own holistic health
5. Demonstrate self-awareness and social intelligence when dealing with others
6. Work effectively as a team member and contribute to a harmonious workplace environment
7. Demonstrate mastery of specified clinical skills
8. Demonstrate satisfactory clinical performance
9. Demonstrate competency to practise as a midwife in one or more practice settings

80% attendance and participation at tutorials

Attendance and participation is an essential criterion for passing this course because the tutorials provide educational experiences aimed at changing student knowledge, attitudes and skills so as to enable students to safely and effectively interact with women and their families in ways that are physically, emotionally, socially and culturally safe.

Non-attendance of more than 20% of tutorials will lead to failure in this course unless adverse circumstances are granted prior to non-attendance. In special circumstances the course coordinator may provide specific make-up work that covers the content of the tutorials that have been missed.
Laboratory Exercises COMPULSORY COURSE COMPONENT

Satisfactory OSCA:
a. Adult CPR (No: 2)
b. PPH
c. Shoulder dystocia
d. Breech birth
e. Newborn Resuscitation No 2

To be eligible to attend clinical placement 100% attendance and satisfactory performance is required in Clinical Laboratories. Attendance is essential preparation for clinical practice and provides relevant clinical skills and knowledge.

Students may be given the opportunity for a makeup laboratory if an adverse circumstances form is submitted and approved by the course coordinator.

Failure to attend 100% of clinical lab will result in either cancellation or delay of clinical placement.

In addition, in order to pass this course the student must obtain a satisfactory pass in all clinical assessments and recieve a satisfactory evaluation by their supervisor for their Continuity of Care Experience.

To be awarded a pass or higher grade in this course each student is required to:
• Satisfactory completion and submission of all assessment items
• A satisfactory pass in all clinical assessments
• Receive a satisfactory evaluation by their supervisor for their Continuity of Care experience
• Satisfactory performance and 100% attendance in Clinical Laboratories
• Complete the Final Exam
• Attend and participate in 80% of Tutorials
• Gain a combined score of 50% or higher from all graded assessment items.
Other: (please specify) Meeting NMB Minimum Practice Requirements: evidence (signed by a supervising RM) of having assisted 40 women and/or babies with complex needs in any maternity setting.
Other: (please specify) Holistic Care Assessments in at least one of the following areas:
a. Antenatal assessment, including palpation (assessed after 20)
b. Labour care in all four stages, including 30 births (assessed after 20)
c. Postnatal assessment for woman and baby, including assist with at least 15 breastfeeding (assessed after 20)
Other: (please specify) Pass CATS satisfactory completion of all four of the following:
a. Administration of IV medication
b. Gowning, gloving and receiving the baby at caesarean section birth
c. Assisting at physiological birth
d. Insertion of NG tube for feeding neonate

Prior successful completion of HUBS1406, HUBS1416, NURS1101, NURS1102, MIDI2101, MIDI2102, MIDI2103, & MIDI2201.
