In this course, students will discuss and debate ethical and legal dilemmas in the childbearing year. They will discuss theories and evidence concerning attachment and transition to parenthood. Students will learn how to provide midwifery care to women who have mental, physical or intellectual impairment during the childbearing year.
This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Midwifery program
| Objectives | 1. Apply legal and ethical concepts to discuss issues of concern in midwifery practice critically 2. Examine the social construction of childbearing and parenting 3. Critically discuss theories and evidence about how pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, attachment and parenting affect women, their partners and their lives 4. Describe and discuss infant developmental milestones in the first year of life 5. Critically discuss theories of parenting within an historical framework and generally support women in their parenting style 6. Describe the psychopathology, clinical features and collaborative care including medications, which is required for women with functional impairment including intellectual and physical disability and serious mental illness: i.e. major mental illnesses, suicidal or homicidal ideation 7. Participate effectively in learning groups and respond responsibly if group is not functioning well |
