The guidelines of the Australian College of Midwives form the basis for identifying under what circumstances midwives need to consult, confer and collaborate with other health care providers. This course prepares midwifery students for collaborative care of women and babies who have less common presentations of the foetus.

The knowledge and skills to be able to maintain, repair and heal the perineum are taught. The care of women who have medical or serious mental health conditions during childbearing is included. The knowledge and skills to perform a physical assessment of the newborn ready for discharge are taught. The care of the neonate with congenital or medical conditions is presented.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Midwifery program
