This course has a focus on the further development of the student as a midwife who can safely care for all women and babies, both sick and well. Content includes: newborn screening, the quality use of medicines, medication calculation and the administration of all routes of medication and IV fluid administration. Surgical care, catheterisation and fluid balance charting are introduced and practised in the laboratory and clinical setting.
This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Midwifery program
| Objectives |
1. Demonstrate 100% accuracy in mathematics with medication and IV calculations for adults and babies 2. Apply knowledge of the law and health policy to the administration of medications, fluids, blood and immunisations 3. Safely administer medications, immunisations, IV fluids and blood products 4. Provide holistic pre, intra and post-operative care to women and babies who experience caesarean births 5. Prevent and collaboratively manage postoperative complications for women and babies 6. Apply the principles of asepsis and wound healing when caring for the surgical wound; including following wound breakdown 7. Recognise and provide appropriate care when the baby has hypoglycaemia, hypothermia, jaundice or is small or large for gestational age 8. Demonstrate mastery of specified clinical skills 9. Demonstrate satisfactory clinical performance |

COMPULSORY COURSE COMPONENT
100% mastery in maths for medications and iv calculation exam
Students will be provided with two opportunities to demonstrate mastery (inclusive of original and 1 attempt). Failure to achieve mastery will result in FF grade for this course. |

COMPULSORY COURSE COMPONENT 80% attendance and participation at tutorials Attendance and participation is an essential criterion for passing this course because the tutorials provide educational experiences aimed at changing student knowledge, attitudes and skills so as to enable students to safely and effectively interact with women and their families in ways that are physically, emotionally, socially and culturally safe.
Non-attendance of more than 20% of tutorials will lead to failure in this course unless adverse circumstances are granted prior to non-attendance. In special circumstances the course coordinator may provide specific make-up work that covers the content of the tutorials that have been missed. |
| Laboratory Exercises |
COMPULSORY COURSE COMPONENT 100% attendance and satisfactory performance is required in Clinical Laboratories. Attendance is essential preparation for clinical practice and provides relevant clinical skills and knowledge.
Students may be given the opportunity for a makeup laboratory if an adverse circumstances form is submitted and approved by the course coordinator.
Failure to attend 100% of clinical lab will result in either cancellation or delay in clinical placement. |

To be awarded a pass grade in this course each student is required to: • Achieve 100% in Maths for Medications and IV Calculations • Attend and participate in 80% of tutorials • Complete 38 hours of clinical laboratory and demonstrate satisfactory performance • Complete 160 hours of clinical placement, and provide evidence of attendance and satisfactory performance on weekly Year 1-2 Midwifery Placement Appraisal forms • Be assessed as competent in the required core skills: a. Newborn resuscitation Objective Structured Clinical Assessment (OSCA) b. Progress towards meeting AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority) requirements: Summary evidence of assisting least five woman and/or babies with complex needs in any maternity setting (5 out of 40) c. CATS satisfactory in at least two of the assessments as set out in the course outline. |
