This course promotes the translation of theory into the practice of midwifery for well women and babies including antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Midwifery program

Objectives On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Apply communication skills to midwifery practice including communication about sensitive personal matters
2. Provide antenatal care for well women and babies under the supervision of a registered maternity care provider
3. Observe and discuss the process of prenatal parent education in the antenatal period
4. Provide labour care for well women and babies under the supervision of a registered midwife
5. Under the supervision of a registered midwife, support a woman to birth her baby and placenta and initiate skin to skin contact and breastfeeding
6. Provide postnatal care to well women and babies under the supervision of a registered midwife, including breastfeeding
7. Support the woman to care for her baby to prevent or correct physiological jaundice, hypothermia and/or hypoglycaemia of the newborn

Essays / Written Assignments Reflection on a critical learning incident from practice. Weighted at 40% of total marks.
Examination: Take Home Weighted at 60% of total marks.
Group/tutorial participation and contribution 80% attendance / participation at face to face tutorials PASS / FAIL

Attendance / participation is an essential criterion for passing this course because the tutorials provide educational experiences aimed at changing student knowledge, attitudes and skills so as to enable students to safely and effectively interact with women and their families in ways that are physically, emotionally, socially and culturally safe. Attendance / participation is required by the Nurses and Midwives Board to ensure competency of the graduate Midwife. The knowledge, attitudes and skills, gained in this and other courses, are essential to meet the requirements for Registration as a Midwife.

Attendance / participation records will be held by the School.

Non-attendance of more than 20% of tutorials will lead to failure in this course unless special consideration is granted prior to non-attendance. In special circumstances the course coordinator may provide specific make-up work that covers the content of the tutorials that have been missed.

A satisfactory pass in all clinical practice assessments is necessary to pass this course. Satisfactory completion and submission of all theoretical assessment items, including participation and attendance, is also necessary to pass this course.
