This course introduces the theories underpinning the practice of midwifery. These theories are helpful for midwives to be able to achieve the module objective, which is to support the woman to optimise her psychophysiology across the childbearing year.

The course provides a holistic perspective on the role of the midwife in relation to working with the woman and her partner, in a culturally safe way, across the childbearing continuum. The childbearing continuum includes preconception, conception, normal pregnancy labour and birth.

Ethical and Legal dimensions of decision-making are explored. A holistic understanding of fetal and neonatal growth, health and wellbeing is also presented. Breastfeeding, bonding and the postnatal experiences are all addressed. The midwifes role in prescribing and administering therapeutic substances is included.
