Explores the complex multidisciplinary nature of national and international management issues, including current public issues and debates.
| Objectives | The objectives of this course are to ensure that students can: 1. understand the philosophical and historical underpinnings of Western and Eastern business cultures 2. analyse the complexities in established and newly emerging regional and global markets 3. understand the nature of Western and Eastern networks and alliances, and modern Western attempts to retain consumers 4. understand the role of complexity and contagion in diffusing ideas and in developing brands 5. generate an appreciation of the essential trade-off mechanism in global versus local issues through engagement in extant case studies 6. identify, select and interpret critical public issues, such as intellectual property rights, sustainable development and privacy, in terms of their impact on Australian and international enterprises 7. engage in, and develop capacity for, cross-disciplinary analysis |

| Content | 1. Deconstruction of the firm in the context of understanding the philosophical and history underpinnings of Western versus Eastern business exchange 2. Emerging global versus local markets, and the variations in Western and Eastern alliances and business networks and intellectual property rights 3. Refinement of business tools to cope in a non-linear environment of complexity and consumer choice 4. Diffusion of innovations and ideas via social and commercial contagion 5. Emerging business "haves" and "have nots" - a case for reviewing Western emerging global brands and retention of consumers 6. The challenge of building electronic and information rich Australian companies in an environment that promotes privacy and sustainable development 7. Balance of public and private sector competition in Australia in response to global brands and a loss of sovereignty 8. Building an Australia-Asia or Australia-US trade block in a World built on unequal trade 9. Western harmonisation of financial markets and Australia's position in developing an e-Commerce driven Financial Centre within Asia |
