This course is designed for students from all health professions to advance their understanding of contemporary primary health care service delivery. Students will explore the emerging directions of primary health models of care from an international and national perspective. This will include universally evolving changes in burden of disease, national health reforms to meet challenges of evidenced based care, interaction between communities and their social and physical environment, influence of social and cultural determinants on health behavior and clinical governance.

Objectives
At successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate an advanced understanding of:
1. International and national public policy reforms for securing healthier communities
2. Contemporary models of care that integrate public health with primary care organised
around people’s needs and expectations so as to make them more socially relevant and more responsive
3 The interaction between communities and their social and physical environment and the ways in which these factors may impact on a person’s clinical presentation, access to health care and ability to comply to with a health plan within rural and remote areas.
4 How history, social and cultural determinants of health might affect a person’s current health status
5 Individualised models of care with an emphasizes on wellness and healing of the entire
person (bio-psycho-socio-spiritual dimensions) as primary goals
6 Epidemiology, public health issues and risk factor management of common conditions seen in primary health care
7 Clinical governance and primary health care

Module 1. International and National Reforms in Primary Health Care
Module 2. Social Determinants of Health and Health Outcomes
Module 3. Models of Primary Case Management and Integrative Care
Module 4. Clinical governance and risk management
