CLINICAL DECISION MAKING IN DIABETES

This is a distance-learning course for practicing medical practitioners involved in the care of people with diabetes mellitus. It introduces candidates to the practical application of evidence-based medicine and clinical epidemiology methods in improving the investigation, diagnosis and management of diabetes. It will describe the principles of evidence-based medicine and how to critically evaluate the medical literature, examine issues related to assessing normality, sensitivity, specificity and predictive values with respect to diagnostic tests for diabetes and examine the principles of screening and decision analysis for diabetes in clinical practice.
|Objectives||1. To gain knowledge and understanding of the practical application of clinical epidemiology methods in the investigation, diagnosis and management of diabetes.
2. To gain knowledge and understanding of the principles of evidence-based medicine and critical appraisal of the medical literature as they apply to diabetes care.
3. To understand the principles of screening in clinical practice as they relate to diabetes care.
4. To gain knowledge of the principles and methods of clinical decision making analysis, as they relate to diabetes care.
This course contributes to the overall course objectives by providing medical professionals with further skills to improve the investigation, diagnosis and management of diabetes in their clinical practice.
|Content||Principles of evidence-based medicine.
Guide to critically evaluating the medical literature.
Assessing normality, sensitivity, specificity, negative and positive predictive values of diagnostic test for diabetes.
Principles of screening for diabetes in clinical practice.
Principles of clinical decision analysis.
|Assumed Knowledge||Knowledge equivalent to that gained in an MBBS degree and from the course, Introduction to Diabetes Care, will be assumed. Participants must be medical practitioners working in area of diabetes care.|
