MEDI6110 is a core course. It will provide candidates with direct experience in a key aspect of quality assurance in clinical practice, practice audit. It will further develop critical appraisal skills, assist candidates to identify areas in which patient outcomes can be improved, and guide further learning to issues which are of direct relevance to their own practice. It will also assist candidates to identify issues for follow-up in the Clinical Attachment.

Objectives 1. To gain a greater knowledge to undertake practice audits within candidate's own clinical setting.
2. To develop / enhance high level skills to critically and systematically review the organisation, structure and process of their clinical care in order to improve the quality of care provided to their patients.
3. To develop candidates ability to optimise patient outcomes by providing best practice standards.
Content Candidates will develop an audit protocol of relevance to their own clinical practice, with audit items identified by the candidate and/or selected from a menu of possible activities. The audit protocol will be approved as a contract and candidates will undertake the audit over a maximum of six months. Candidates will report on the results of their audit, including the identification of needs and possible approaches to meeting those needs. Changes to practice will be identified and instituted. The audit will then be repeated over a similar period to the first audit, to evaluate the impact of practice change on patient outcomes.
