This course is Part A of a multi-term sequence. Part B must also be completed to meet the requirements of the sequence.

Projects undertaken may include a placement or student research activity within University laboratories or within a clinical setting. Projects may require a wide range of research related activities including laboratory work, database research and analysis, and interviews, questionnaires or surveys. Projects cannot involve the unsupervised application of clinical skills by the student - where the application of clinical skills are required it is customary to involve a clinician as a Supervisor.

Objectives

The purpose of this course is to develop students' interest and skills in the context of a medical research project. This is done within the framework of one year supervised research that culminates in a written thesis.

Content

A program of supervised research approved by the Head of School, School of Medicine and Public Health. If the research project involves human participants, human tissue or access to personal records, eg medical records, approval must be obtained from the appropriate research ethics committee. If the research project involves animals, approval from the relevant University ethics committee must be sought.

Candidates will present a project report in the form of a thesis. The project is also to be presented and defended orally.

Other: (please specify)	Thesis - Submission of final draft of entire thesis (including abstract, introductory chapter, study objectives and hypothesis, methods, results, discussion, conclusions, references and appendices) to the Program Convenor. The thesis will be marked by two delegated independent assessors.
Presentations - Individual	Final Oral Presentation - Oral presentation of entire project, including abstract, background, methods, results and discussion, to supervisor/s, two delegated independent oral presentation assessors and other interested parties.
