This course is designed to allow students to continue to develop their understanding and knowledge of medical and clinical science, with a particular focus on chronic diseases and subspecialty areas of ophthalmology and dermatology.
Full-time students who enrol in Clinical Science & Medicine must enrol concurrently in Professional Practice 4. In exceptional circumstances, such as when a student fails one of the concurrent courses, enrolments outside of these concurrent arrangements may be approved by the Head of School.

ObjectivesAt the end of the course, students should have knowledge and understanding of:

1. The nature of chronic disease and the need for multidisciplinary input into care in chronic disease.

At the end of the course, students should have developed the following skills:

1. The ability to interpret medical evidence in a critical and scientific manner, and to use libraries and other information resources to pursue independent inquiry relating to medical problems.

At the end of the course, students should demonstrate the following professional attitudes:

1. An appreciation of the need to master high standards of medical practice.

2. An awareness of the need to communicate with patients and their families in a respectful and sensitive manner.

3. Respect for community values, including an appreciation of the diversity of human background and cultural values.

4. A commitment to ease pain and suffering.

5. An awareness of the need to communicate with patients and their families and to involve them fully in planning management.

6. A willingness to work effectively in a team with other health care professionals.

7. An appreciation of the role of evidence based guidelines for guiding high quality clinical practice
ContentIn relation to cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal tract, neurology, diabetes/endocrinology, rheumatology (incl. orthopaedics), immunology and infectious diseases, haematology, psychiatry, ophthalmology, dermatology and sexuality students will study:

1. aetiology, pathology, symptoms and signs

2. common diagnostic procedures

3. principles of management of common conditions

4. recognition of common presentations

5. interpreting medical evidence in a critical and scientific manner
Replacing Course(s)MEDI3011 and MEDI3012
TransitionBecause courses MEDI3011 and MEDI3012 are being modified for 2005, students who fail both these courses in 2004 will be required to enrol in both MEDI3015 and MEDI3016 in 2005. Students who fail either MEDI3011 or MEDI3012 in 2004 will be requried to enrol in the new course that contains content and assessment items the student failed. The student will be advised by the Head of School which course they must enrol in.

Group/tutorial participation and contributionAttendance and participation in problem-based learning tutorials will be monitored by tutors throughout the course. Students are expected to attend all tutorials. Unsatisfactory attendance will be considered as unprofessional behaviour and may result in a student being unsatisfactory for this course.
