Introduction to Public Health

Enables students to gain an understanding of the public health issues related to the investigation, management and prevention of health problems in groups and communities, as well as gaining an insight into research methodology and a critical appreciation of the medical literature with an emphasis on evidence-based practice. This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Medicine program.

Objectives 1. Demonstrate capacity to use appropriate library and other information resources

2. Demonstrate basic skills required to pursue an appropriately targeted independent enquiry relating to a simple medical problem

3. Identify relevant information sources required to answer a simple medical problem

4. Assess and interpret results of scientific studies relevant to common medical problems

5. Demonstrate basic understanding of the requirements for valid diagnostic tests

6. Identify the common health care problems in the community and their modifiable risk factors

7. Be aware of the basic principles used to develop screening programs for common preventable diseases

8. Understand the principles in investigating outbreaks of common infectious diseases, and how these are applied in NSW
Content Fixed Resource Sessions covering public health issues and exercises in data interpretation
(evidence in medicine).

Tutorials in epidemiology and evidence-based practice.

Transition The current policy of the Bachelor of Medicine program is that students must successfully complete all requirements of Year 1 before progressing to Year 2. For 2004, there are no significant changes to course and assessment content and therefore students who fail Year 1 in 2003 will be required to re-enrol into the entire suite of new Year 1 courses in 2004.
