Develops the essential clinical skills and knowledge that are required for a student to begin medical practice including occupational health and safety, infection control, and interviewing skills. This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Medicine program.
| Objectives | At the end of the course, students shall: 1. Demonstrate an ability to communicate appropriately with patients, health professionals and the public 2. Be able to describe the modes of delivery of health care services in Australia (in general) and in NSW (specifically) 3. Demonstrate an appropriate, professional attitude as a medical student, recognising that the primary professional responsibility is to the health interest of the patient 4. Apply the basic ethical and legal constraints that structure the interaction between health care professionals and patients 5. Know how to interact safely with patients and professionals in the health care system,with due regard for hospital and system safety and OH&S standards 6. Recognise potential risk situations and be able to respond appropriately 7. Demonstrate initial skills in the approach to taking a structured medical history 8. Recognise key features of the history and communicate these to other health care professionals 9. Develop basic skills in the initial management of uncomplicated wounds and simple trauma 10. Demonstrate an understanding of the basis of clinical pharmacology and use of drugs in clinical medicine. 11. Apply a knowledge of basic anatomical pathology to clinical medicine |

| Content | The students will be introduced to a series of medical problems in tutorials. Students will generate learning targets associated with professional practice during these sessions relating to topics such as infection control, OH&S, ethics and health law. The students will then undertake their own learning, directed toward these learning targets. Various health professionals will then provide lectures, tutorials and information sessions as they relate to the professional practice problems being investigated. Students will attend practical exercises relating to infection control and communication skills. Students will also attend clinical tutorials relating to medical consultation skills |

| Transition | The following transition arrangements will apply to any student undertaking the current program who fails a course. The current policy of the Bachelor of Medicine program is that students must successfully complete all requirements of Year 1 before progressing to Year 2. For 2004, there are no significant changes to course and assessment content and therefore students who fail Year 1 in 2003 will be required to re-enrol into the entire suite of new Year 1 courses in 2004. |
