The course provides foundation knowledge in theoretical and methodological principles of linguistics. Students are introduced to the study of the organisation of information within linguistic systems and to the study of language acquisition and language use.
| Objectives | Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate understanding of: 1. the nature of language as a human communication system; 2. basic principles of semantics and pragmatics as applied to English; 3. the acquisition of language by children; 4. the influence of social factors on language use. |
