This course examines the sound systems of English (phonetic and phonological) and the syntactic structure of simple and complex English sentences.
| Objectives | Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate: 1. an understanding of the basic mechanisms of production and classification of speech sounds; 2. an understanding of the phonological principles of contrast, complementary distribution and free variation; 3. the ability to analyse English clause structures; 4. an understanding of the semantic and functional correlates of particular grammatical structures. |
