This course builds knowledge and understanding about the history and philosophy of research in linguistics. This knowledge and understanding is used to develop insights into the ways that problems in linguistics are conceived and acted on. The course enhances skills and capacities in reading and literature reviewing, critical reasoning and argument, essay writing and verbal communication. The course includes: discussions of theoretical and applied directions in linguistics; student-based presentations of key issues; and on-line bibliographic searches and writing techniques.
| Objectives | By the end of this course students will have: 1. An advanced comprehension of contemporary issues in linguistics. 2. An advanced comprehension of the variety of theoretical approaches with which to examine and evaluate linguistics processes and problems. 3. A wide range of skills and methods necessary to undertake a complex analysis and communication of linguistic issues and to critically analyse measures, indicators, reports and policies. |

| Transition | The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Social Science Honours programs underwent an external program review in 2008. As part of this review some changes were implemented for all Honours courses. If you enrolled prior to 2009, you will be able to complete your Honours program as it stood at your time of enrollment, this being: - Your Dissertation will be between 15,000 and 20,000 words. - You will be given opportunity to give an oral presentation of your work, but this is not mandatory. |
