Introduces principal linguistic characteristics and sociolinguistic positions of Indigenous languages in Australia. Explores linguistic and cultural dimensions of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal, Torres Strait, and creole language structures and uses.
ObjectivesOn successful completion of this course, students are expected to demonstrate: 1. Knowledge of past and present distribution of Australias Indigenous languages 2. Knowledge of basic linguistic characteristics of Australian languages 3. Understanding of the place of languages in Indigenous societies, past and present 4. Basic structural features of Indigenous languages: sounds, words, grammar, meanings 3. Variation in Indigenous languages: dialects, speech styles and registers 4.
