Investigates the role of language in Aboriginal sociality, both in the past and in contemporary society. It will also provide basic understanding of the structural features and distribution of Australian languages.

Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate:
1. awareness of the role of language in Aboriginal sociality, both in the past and in the present
2. understanding of the basic structural features and distribution of Australian languages
3. research and general information literacy skills
Content Investigation of the role of language in Aboriginal sociality, and the basic structure and distribution of Australian languages, with particular emphasis on the following areas:
1. the role of language names in the construction of individual and group identities
2. the nature of registers and their role in the construction of identities
3. kinship terminologies
4. aboriginal languages in education
5. the relationships among, and prehistory of, Australian languages
