Aims to provide students with an overview of speech and language disorders. The course is designed for students with a background in education, nursing, health sciences, psychology, and linguistics. Specific topic areas include: language impairment in children and adults (including reading disability), speech and voice disorders in children and adults, and stuttering. (Note that as this material is covered in courses within the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology are NOT eligible to enroll in this course.)
| Objectives | Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of communication 2. Identify the main causes and consequences of communication disorders for children 3. Identify the main causes and consequences of communication disorders for adults 4. Identify ways in which understanding of communication disorders can improve communication success and access within the community |
