As demonstrated by successful completion of coursework and a thesis, students undertaking the Leisure and Tourism Studies focused honours program should:
1. Acquire the scholarly skills and self-confidence necessary to conceptualise, research and compose a substantive piece of research relevant to the field of leisure and tourism studies.
2. Gain contextualised understanding of advanced approaches to social scientific treatment of leisure and tourism studies.
3. Develop an appreciation of the complex theories and concepts which inform current practice in leisure and tourism studies.
4. Develop research and reflective skills relevant to advanced study in the social sciences.
5. Develop written and oral communication skills appropriate for a professional scholarly environment.

This course provides an extended opportunity for students about to undertake an Honours research study to think critically about the social research process. Topics include:
1. the philosophical underpinnings of social research;
2. the connections between theory and method;
3. ethical issues;
4. choice of methodology and specific methods will be examined in the context of leisure and tourism research.
The course will also incorporate an examination of the process involved in writing a research proposal.
