This course is a multi-term sequence. Parts A & B must be completed to meet the requirements of the sequence. The separate elements of the sequence must be completed in consecutive terms, ie without an intervening term.
This course requires students to demonstrate an advanced command of substantive and theoretical criminal law and procedure. The focus is primarily on the criminal laws of New South Wales, although a comparative component is included. Students will critically examine and evaluate contemporary doctrinal principles of criminal law and procedure, including a broad range of criminal offences, defences and procedural rules in a professional and scholarly context.
| Objectives | At the conclusion of this course students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an advanced understanding and command of doctrinal criminal law and procedure; 2. Demonstrate an advanced understanding and command of relevant theoretical models of crime and criminal law policy; 3. Demonstrate a sophisticated ability to analyse and reflect on complex criminal cases at a practical and theoretical level; 4. Demonstrate the ability to prepare and present opinions on complex cases at a level suitable to specialist and non-specialist audiences; 5. Demonstrate an advanced ability to undertake doctrinal research, interpretation and analysis; 6. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the ethical and professional limits on practice in criminal law |
