This course is Part B of a multi-term sequence. Part A must be successfully completed before undertaking Part B. The separate elements of the sequence must be completed in consecutive terms ie without an intervening term.


Introduces the principles of criminal responsibility and considers a broad range of criminal offences, major defences, aspects of criminal procedure, sentencing and the role of criminal law in society. The course will focus upon the law of New South Wales, principally the Crimes Act 1900 and the Criminal Procedure Act 1986.

Objectives Our objective is to promote and develop an appreciation and understanding of the following:

1. the concept of crime and the role of criminal law in society
2. the notion of criminal responsibility
3. the elements of a broad range of criminal offences
4. the elements of the major defences
5. the rules of criminal procedure
6. the principal agencies, procedures and routines involved in the administration of criminal justice, in particular in the policing and prosecution of crime and the sentencing of criminal offenders
7. the principles of sentencing and range of sentencing options
Content This course will introduce students to the principles of criminal responsibility. Including detailed consideration of a broad range of criminal offences, such as "assault"; "sexual assault", "murder and manslaughter"; "property offences"; "drug offences"; "traffic offences" and "public order offences". It will examine the major defences and examine in detail the rules of criminal procedure in the criminal justice system. The course will consider principles of sentencing and victim's rights and compensation.
