Description

This course builds on skills acquired in JAPN2501 and introduces students to the study of the Japanese cultural tradition through the use of a variety of late intermediate level Japanese language materials.

Please note: Students are required to enrol in the face-to-face version of this course if they live within 25 kilometres of the Callaghan campus. The online version is available only to students who 1) are enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts Online, 2) are based overseas or outside the Newcastle region, or 3) have completed the 1000-level JAPN courses online. Exemptions are granted upon application to the course coordinator.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. Recognise an additional 300 kanji beyond those taught in JAPN2501.

2. Analyse Japanese texts at the level of JLPT4.

3. Translate texts from Japanese to English at the level of JLPT4.

4. Identify key themes in the development of the Japanese cultural tradition.

Students will study written texts and audio-visual material related to the development of the Japanese cultural tradition.
