This course investigates a number of contemporary issues in the rapidly changing information technology environment. Considers social and ethical issues in information technology. It also investigates in depth a number of topical theoretical issues and practical information technology tools and broadens students' perspective and skills.

This course has a Compulsory Course Component in the final examination.

Objectives
On completion of this course students will have the ability to:
1. Understand the effects of information technology on society, organisations, communities and individuals;
2. Consider the ethical implications of their information technology decisions;
3. Participate effectively in debates on a number of topical information technology issues;
4. Apply some of the latest information technology tools and techniques;
5. Apply their information technology knowledge and skills in a multidisciplinary environment.
Content
Topics will generally include:

1. Information technology in the past and in the future
2. The effects of information technology on society, organisations, communities and individuals
3. Ethical behaviour of information technology professionals
4. Contemporary theoretical issues. Examples include the digital divide, biotechnology, optical and quantum computing, computer human interfaces and the limitations of computing.
5. Contemporary information technology tools and techniques.
6. Applying information technology across disciplines.

Assumed Knowledge
This course requires proficiency in understanding and expressing complex concepts at tertiary level. High levels of academic English are required. Students who have not undertaken at least 40 units of 2000/3000 level courses on campus at The University of Newcastle at Callaghan, Ourimbah or Singapore are advised to consult with the Course Co-ordinator before enrolling.

Examination: Formal
Final Examination. This component has a Compulsory Course Component. A mark of at least 40% in the Final Examination is required to demonstrate that the student has fulfilled Course Objectives 1 and 2. These are assessed essentially in the Final Examination, while the remaining Course Objectives are addressed in all assessment items. On passing the exam, a final mark will be given in the course and it will be recorded that the student has satisfied the Compulsory Course Component.

All students sitting the examination will be judged to have had sufficient opportunity to demonstrate their attainment of the relevant course objectives. Those who fail to satisfy the Compulsory Course Component will have the normal avenues of appeal open to them. In the event of a successful appeal the student will be given a supplementary assessment to determine whether the student has satisfied the Compulsory Course Component.
