This comprises the first part of Information Technology Research courses which are completed in INFO6102.
It provides students with a review and elaboration of the philosophical, ontological and epistemological issues that underlie thinking about research and research practices. Differing methodologies, pertinent to thesis-based research and technical or creative project-based research, are examined in the disciplines of design, communication and information technology. Emphasis is given to the application of specific research techniques in information technology and critiques of underlying theoretical assumptions as well as ethical considerations for research. Students also examine contemporary literature relevant to their proposed research topic, focusing on theoretical perspectives and methodological assumptions.
Students will undertake a subsequent literature review in order to develop a conceptual understanding of contemporary approaches to their field of information technology research resulting in a research project presented at the completion of the associated course, INFO6102
| Objectives | In this course students will: 1. select and administer appropriate methods for collecting and analysing material and research data; 2. apply research methods to problems or issues within information technology; 3. develop critical and analytical skills; 4. acquire and demonstrate ethical standards appropriate to the field of study; 5. engage with prior literature and technical/creative material; 6. develop research, project and time management skills, and 7. develop writing and production skills. |
