Introduces the theories and practices of designing a user interface that will be used to maintain a database in a small business. Introduces the concepts and practices of system design by evolutionary prototyping and the prototyping system development life cycle. Emphasises end-user input into the prototyping system development life cycle. Introduces the three-tier database access model and core technologies used to implement this model.
At successful completion of the course, student will have:
1. Acquired the knowledge and develop the skills needed to prototype an end user application using a Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool.
2. Continued to refine the knowledge and skills needed to produce user interfaces that are aesthetic, intuitive and easy to use.
3. Acquired the knowledge and develop the skills needed to initiate and control all phases of database use and maintenance from a programmed interface
4. Improved the skills used in constructing Entity-Relationship (ER) models from a given description to produce a corresponding normalised Relational model.
5. Developed the skills needed to design, implement and present reports from a database using a programmed interface.
6. Acquired the understanding and develop the skills needed to design, implement and effectively use appropriate interfaces and classes in database projects.

Credit will not be granted for both INFO2040 and INFO6080.
Students are assumed to have a sound understanding of the following areas:
1. An appropriate current Windows operating system environment
2. Computer programming using a procedural or object-oriented language
3. Data modelling, including Entity-Relationship diagrams
4. The Relational model and creation of relational tables from ER diagrams
5. Normalisation of relations
6. The use of a relational database management system
