Advanced Professional Skills in Biomedical Science

Provides an introduction to skills required in laboratories that are not the technical skills provided by practical classes in traditional academic courses. Emphasis will be on providing an overview of the purposes, organisation, operation and output of different types of laboratories. There is also an emphasis on the commercialisation of intellectual property derived from laboratory investigations.

Objectives
To teach students to:
1. Develop a set of learning goals.
2. Work effectively in a group.
3. List the steps in the establishment of a research laboratory.
4. Understand the process of research grant applications and review.
5. Be aware of the need for animal and human ethics clearance before undertaking research.
6. Understand the issues surrounding Genetically Modified Organisms including clearances for research, environmental use, etc.
7. Know the procedures for safety clearances and be aware of Occupational Health and Safety issues.
8. Undertake the preparation of an abstract for a conference and the presentation of data using Powerpoint at a conference.
9. Know about intellectual property as it applies to laboratory based research.
10. Understand the processes of commercialisation of laboratory based intellectual property.
11. Prepare a Gantt chart for the preparation of a product.
12. Understand the differences between safety studies, phase I, II, III trials for clinical and environmental research.
13. Understand the need for registration of chemical, drug and food products and know the appropriate agencies involved.
14. Be aware of QA/QC as it applies to product production.

3. A Gantt Chart for the production of a product
4. A portfolio relating to their product
5. Visits to working laboratories
