Anatomy for Biomedical Science

10 Units 1000 Level Course

Available in 2013

Callaghan Campus Semester 2

Previously offered in 2012, 2011, 2010

This course will provide students with an overview of the structure of the human body. It consists of a series of lectures and laboratories covering functional anatomy of the human body including the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, cardiovascular system, thorax, abdomen and pelvis. Areas emphasised are those that will prepare students for a career in research that focuses on the major body systems. The course will also prepare students for subsequent careers in any of the health science disciplines.

Objectives At the end of this course students should be able to describe the following for major organs and structures in the head, limbs, chest and abdomen:

1. Their structure (Gross Anatomy and relevant Histology).
2. Their relationship to other organs and its surface anatomy.
3. Their blood supply, nerve supply, as well as its venous and lymphatic drainage.
4. How the organ's structure relates to its function (i.e. it's physiology).
Content This course will cover the following:
1. Introduction to the anatomy laboratory
2. Overview of the skeleton and joints
3. Upper limb and lower limb anatomy
4. Anatomy of the vasculature
5. Anatomy of the thorax
6. Anatomy of the abdomen
7. Anatomy of the urinary system
8. Pelvic anatomy and the perineum
9. Anatomy of the brain and nervous system
Replacing Course(s) Replacing 10 units of Directed course options in semester 1 Year 1 of the Biomedical Science program - MATH1110 Mathematics 111 10 unit OR PSYC1020 Psychology Introduction 1020
Transition MATH1110 Mathematics 111 and PSYC1020 Psychology Introduction 1020 will still be offered by the Faculty of Science and IT and so repeating students have the opportunity to repeat this course in 2010 semester 1 or 2 for MATH1110 or semester 2 for PSYC1020.
