This subject aims to provide students with an understanding of issues and skills involved in the application of health promotion in a variety of community settings.
| Objectives | The subject introduces students to the role of health promotion professionals in facilitating schools, workplaces, health care providers and community organisations to undertake health promotion activities. | ||

| Content | The subject consists of four modules covering the following topics: Module 1 - Health Promotion in the Workplace Involves critical appraisal of workplace health promotion programs including an examination of advantages/disadvantages, and barriers/facilitators. Exercises involve appraisal of current practices within a workplace and development of a workplace-based health promotion program. Module 2 - Health Promotion by Health Care Providers Involves consideration of the role of health care providers in health promotion and the development of skills in modifying health care providers' health promotion practices. Exercises are based on the development of programs to encourage general practitioners and nurses to provide health promotion. Module 3 - Community Action Involves identifying opinion leaders, forming and liaising with a community committee, negotiating program goals and components. Exercises are based around critical review of a community action program. Module 4 - Health Promotion in Schools This module aims to develop an understanding of the health promotion opportunities that exist within the formal and informal school curriculum and the appropriate strategies for effecting improvements in child health. |
