This course develops advanced and integrated knowledge and specialized skill in facilitation of group counselling sessions. Students will critically analyse and synthesise complex knowledge relating to a range of group interventions, and will research and apply knowledge of group dynamics to relationship education. Students will develop expertise in supporting change using the group environment.
| Objectives | At the end of this course, students will demonstrate: - Specialist skill in identifying and selecting appropriate group participants. - Advanced knowledge and skill in developing and implementing group interventions. - Advanced skill in developing positive change at the individual and group level. - Advanced skill in developing a therapeutic alliance for change. - Capacity to research and apply knowledge relating to group phases and dynamics. - Specialised skill in identifying and managing transference and counter-transference in group relationships. - Specialised skill in group facilitation and maintaining a safe group environment. - Capacity to critically analyse and apply knowledge relating to individual change and wider social ecosystems. - Specialist knowledge and skill in developing individual and group schema for interpersonal learning and change. - Capacity to critically analyse and evaluate a wide variety of group interventions and their limitations. - Capacity to critically analyse and apply ethical standards in group counselling. - Knowledge and skill in the use of supervision and professional development to maintain a high standard of facilitation skills required to autonomously undertake group counselling and relationship education. - Capacity to critically reflect on, and apply, practically what has been learnt theoretically within the course. |

| Content | - Theoretical frameworks informing group counselling interventions. - Variety of systemic therapeutic group work interventions and their application, including evidence based and culturally sensitive approaches. - Strengths, imitations and contraindications of specific group counselling models. - Understanding and applying models of stages of group development. - Types of group leadership. - Facilitating group counselling, including: - identifying and selecting appropriate group participants. - goal setting, managing confidentiality. - analysing and managing transference and counter-transference in group relationships. - identifying and applying a range of interventions at the individual, sub-group and whole group levels. - Monitoring patterns of involvement. - Managing key transitions and stages of development. - Facilitating group to develop insight and use of meaning attribution. - Facilitating group to develop connections between group members and their own thoughts, feelings and actions. - Assisting group members to develop self awareness and understanding of defences. - Maintaining a safe environment. - Appropriate selection and use of group techniques to meet the expressed needs of group participants. - Complex interpersonal interactions, power in relationships, groups, abuse and conflict. - Managing conflict positively and constructively in group counselling. - Analysing and responding to group dynamics and associated behaviours. - Working effectively with voluntary and involuntary clients. - Self awareness and impact on group process and effective group counselling leadership. - Ethical standards, behaviour and legal frameworks for therapeutic relationships in groups. - Reflective practice and the influence of values and attitudes. - Evaluating techniques and effectiveness of group counselling facilitation and interventions. |
