Applied Research in Health and Safety

This course is designed for students to develop their fundamental research knowledge through application of critical appraisal, research methodologies and evidence based practice in the health, injury management and safety contexts to assist in determining issues of quality of service, service provision, cost, accountability and validity of interventions.

Students will develop a research study proposal which will include details of a planned research study, study objectives, details of and justification for methodology, data collection, data analysis techniques and how the research will be written up. This research proposal will provide all the information on how to conduct the study.

Objectives
This course is designed to enable students to:
1. Critically appraise literature and further develop critical appraisal skills
2. Critique a range of research methodologies
3. Develop an understanding of outcome measures, evaluation tools and evidence based practice and their application in research
4. Identify and discuss future research directions
5. Develop a research proposal

-Research methodology
-Critical evaluation of assessment methods and analysis of assessment results and review of current issues in health, injury management and safety
-Evidence-based interpretation and practice
-Research planning

Students can complete HLSC6130 in place of HLSC6103 in the Master of Workplace Injury Management.
