Working With Men and Boys in Human Services

The course will take a multi-disciplinary approach to exploring the current research into human service delivery to men and boys. The course is suitable for a wide range of students across a variety of disciplines including education, social work, medicine and allied health. Research and case studies from a range of fields of study will explore different perspectives and practices in working with men and boys. Students will use this information to examine current practices in the students particular field of study. Students will be exposed to a range of practices shown to be effective in improving service delivery in human services to men and boys. Students will reflect on their own ideas about being a man or woman working with men and boys and the implications for their own future practices.

Objectives
For students to:
1. Develop an understanding of the differences in service provision for men and women both as practiononers and as clients
2. Develop an understanding of effective practices for boys and men in human service provision
3. Develop an understanding of the issues re: boys and men pertinent to delivery of services in their field of study
Content
Course content will cover the following areas:
1. Research revelations what does the data tell us about men and boys?
2. Key competencies and principles for working with men and boys
3. What happens in the work place skills; knowledge and attitudes relating to men and boys
4. Case studies and models of best practice in Australia and overseas
5. Investigation of specific areas of human service provision community, schools and health
6. Critical reflections on working with men and boys personal and systems based
