Nutrition in Childhood

The study of nutrition in childhood will focus on food and nutrition requirements, and nutrition education for children. The development of eating behaviours and barriers to change will also be studied. Students will be provided with the opportunity to integrate theory with practical applications in the laboratory.

Objectives On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Identify the role and significant food sources of nutrients essential to children.
2. State the nutritional requirements for growth and development in children.
3. Describe the key diet related health issues for Australian children
4. Identify the ways in which the school environment contributes to the development of eating behaviours in childhood.
5. Identify opportunities for modifications of the school environment to promote nutrition education and healthy eating in children.
6. Indentify and analyse existing nutrition curricula for schools.
Content Weekly lectures and tutorials will examine the following topics:
1. Introduction to basic prinicples of Nutrition and nutrients
2. Nutritional requirements for normal growth and development in children and adolescents
3. Dietary guidelines for children and adolescents
4. Development of food and nutrition policies within health promoting schools
5. Nutrition and school performance
6. Overweight and obesity in childhood
7. Nutrition related health issues for Australian children and adolescents - Type 1 Diabetes
8. Nutrition related health issues for Australian children - food allergy
9. Eating disorders in children and adolescents
10. Sports Nutrition
11. Nutrition related health issues for Australian children - Cystic Fibrosi and chronic conditions
12. Teaching nutrition within the curriculum school setting other school-based impacts on food and nutrition
13. Schools as a setting for Health Promotion - The Health Promoting Schools Approach, nutrition education within the school setting and canteen based nutrition interventions: Fresh Tastes @ School as well as other school based programs.
