Directed Reading and Research

A student may approach a member of the History discipline and ask him/her to supervise a directed reading and research project of their own making. Under the supervision of that member of the History discipline, that student is responsible for devising an appropriate reading list, which has to be approved by the discipline supervisor. Regular meetings with the supervisor are required. The student must also seek the approval of the Head of Discipline to enrol in HIST3001, and must have the approval of a member of the discipline willing to supervise the Directed Reading and Research topic.

Objectives This course aims to:
provide students with a broad understanding of the major developments in history from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century;
introduce students to various historical debates;
familiarise students with primary source material;
encourage students to develop good research and writing skills, with a particular focus on how to write a research piece.
Content The course content is to be determined by the student in consultation with the course supervisor.

Examination: Class A test (written or oral), as specified in the course guide, 20-40%
Essays / Written Assignments One to three written assignments, which might include minor or major essays, book reviews, bibliographies, or other similar exercises, totaling 4,000-6,000 words, or 50-70%
Group/tutorial participation and contribution A mark for participation, preparation and involvement, worth 10-20%
