Reading and Writing Australian Biography

In this course students explore biography from a range of contexts through reading and discussion of how these texts were constructed and how they can be read as historical documents.

Objectives Upon successful completion of this course students will be expected to demonstrate:
1. Knowledge and understanding of the genre of biography and its social and cultural positioning in Australia;
2. Depth of knowledge and understanding of various forms of biography and the ways in which these are constructed and used;
3. Skills in critically reading social and cultural biography;
4. Knowledge and understanding of the place of biography in Australian social and cultural contexts;
5. Skills in research and communication appropriate to advanced undergraduate level.

* the social functions of biography in Australia
* forms of biography--literary, historical, life history, political, feminist, indigenous
* writers, publishers, magazines
* using biography in hybrid genres

Transition Students who have previously completed SOCA3668 or HUMA3668 Reading and Writing Australian Biography are not permitted to enrol in HIST2668
