International Issues in Australian Politics and Foreign Policy

This course will focus on international issues in Australian politics - the position adopted by Australian governments, and by political parties and pressure groups in Australia, in regard to key issues in international diplomacy and Australia's relations with other countries. The course will examine policy areas traditionally associated with Australian foreign policy, such as defence and trade, but it will also refer to the widening policy agenda, such as human rights and environmental negotiations, associated with globalisation and Australia's participation in multi-lateral institutions such as the UN and the APEC Forum.
| Objectives | Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate an awareness and knowledge of key issues in Australia's international relationships with other countries and multi-lateral institutions. 2. Demonstrate an ability to research, analyse and evaluate different policy options to do with key issues in Australia's international relationships. 3. Demonstrate an ability to relate this knowledge and analysis to wider theories in the fields of international relations and political science. 4. Demonstrate an ability to communicate this knowledge and analytical capacity in effective oral and written form. |

| Content | The course will focus on the positions advocated within Australian politics and adopted by Australian governments on a range of international issues and negotiations: 1. The history of Australian foreign policy 2. The making of foreign policy 3. Economic Issues - trade, managing the global economy 4. Social Issues - human rights in foreign policy, foreign aid 5. Environmental Issues - international negotiations 6. Defence and Security Issues - international and regional; the US relationship; terrorism 7. Regional and Country to country relationships: South Asia; China, Indonesia. |
