Entrepreneurship usually refers to the process of developing new business ventures, or growing an existing one. Central to this activity are entrepreneurs: risk-taking individuals who seek to bring about change and new opportunities, both for themselves and for the business communities in which they operate. Such persons play an important role in commerce, trade, and economics growth in many nations. Successful entrepreneurship requires more then merely luck and money. It is a cohesive process of planning, idea development, creativity and risk management.
This unit seeks to give students a better understanding of entrepreneurial behaviours. It examines the nature of entrepreneurship, the key steps involved in starting a new business venture, sources of assistance for entrepreneurs, and management of the entrepreneurial business venture.
Education plays a crucial role in this process, building upon lessons learnt from the past but firmly focuses upon current and future challenges and opportunities. The scope and richness of theoretical development combined with practical experience creates a vast potential for students to develop their existing skills.
The strengthening of entrepreneurship and its management are currently important goals of most countries operating in environments of ever-increasing local regional, national and global competitiveness. An entrepreneurial approach to management can be applied to both new venture situations as well as to established businesses. Hence this unit seeks to give students a better understanding of entrepreneurship, the key steps involved in starting a new business venture, sources of assistance for entrepreneurs, and management of the entrepreneurial business venture.
The course provides a framework for understanding the process of managing entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial endeavours. This involves examining methods of analysing new venture opportunities; approaches to assessing and acquiring resources; strategies for acquiring existing businesses; as well as developing knowledge and competency in meeting the unique challenges of managing and marketing a growing enterprise. Key interdependent issues examined in this course include the customer, products and services, managerial processes, the organisation and leadership.
The focus of the course, given the nature of entrepreneurship, is contemporary in all respects moving instantly to the 21st century where the approach to entrepreneurship reflects modern business advantages and constraints. This will enable students to deal successfully with dynamic demands from markets and customers that are becoming evermore sophisticated and knowledgeable. Group work is used to develop further skills in working with people in a creative and risk taking business environment.

1. Demonstrate knowledge of the issues involved in new business creation, growth and conclusion; of the entrepreneurial personality; and of the factors that affect enterprising behaviours.
2. Apply critical thinking skills through analysis, argumentation and evaluation of entrepreneurship-related literature.
3. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
4. Demonstrate writing, research and planning skills.
5. Develop a formal proposal for a new business venture.
6. Demonstrate skills in group work for the preparation and presentation of a business plan.
