The short period of just over thirty years has witnessed evolution of big business from national markets with foreign exports to regional markets (Asia, America, Europe), and on to global markets. "Globalism" has become a fashionable word. However, in reality it represents the business environment in which we live, such as the recent financial Tsunami that has impacted enterprises around the world.
The modern day search for competitive advantage has businesses beginning to emphasize the playing of a global game. Companies may explore new technologies in the United States or Japan, while development laboratories are in Italy. Start-up production may take place with skilled German labour, and later be transferred to plants in China, Mexico or Viet Nam. The achievement of corporate success can only be accomplished by people. In a global marketplace where "borderless organizations" are quickly becoming the norm, employees have an increasingly important role in the cultivation of company capability. The level of employee involvement in companies has expanded in general, and in globally-oriented corporations, progressive managers recognize that only through the effective management of people can organizations survive. However, globalization presents new problems and new challenges in human resource management.
Within the past decade there has been a rapidly growing body of literature on managing a global workforce, global leadership, global assignments, human resources management in international business ventures, and globalization of the human resource function.
This course examines the management of people in organisations across different countries and cultures. Its primary aim is to examine the roles and functions of the various HRM activities within an international context. The course provides an overview of the comparative and human resource management issues associated with conducting international business operations. In doing so, the course draws on a cross-section of the literature in human resource management, organisational behaviour and comparative management. The course will focus on managing workforces in a global setting, human resource management and development in international joint ventures and global corporations. Topics include: hiring and selecting, training and developing, compensating, motivating, performance appraising, retaining in an international setting, cross cultural management, and the development of global managers.
|Objectives||Upon completion of this course, participants should:
1. Have developed an awareness of the key issues arising from organisations operating in an international context;
2. Be able to recognise the key requirements for managing people in an international context;
3. Be able to assess critical international human resource management issues;
4. Be able to understand the impact that culture has on management in the international context;
5. Be able to engage critically with recent research in the literature in order to gain a deeper understanding of ongoing developments in the human resource management
6. Be able to apply the theories and concepts learned to both hypothetical environments and real situations such as their own workplace; and
7. Be able to indicate some likely developments in future global people management
