This course introduces the major features of employment relations in Australia, examining the interaction of people and their agents in the workplace and the way in which external institutions affect or regulate this interaction. An appraisal of the degree to which the employment relationship is governed by common or conflicting interests provides a theoretical perspective.

ObjectivesOn successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Define and discuss foundation concepts in ER;
2. Critically evaluate various theories and frameworks of ER for their fundamental assumptions, intellectual rigour, and practical value;
3. Measure and analyse the level of industrial conflict and list the state-derived and other controls over industrial action;
4. Evaluate the role of management and employer organisations in the employment relations system;
5. Evaluate the nature of employee voice, consultation, representation and trade unionism;
6. Explain key elements of Australia’s regulatory framework, particularly the Constitutional arrangements, the law of employment, the laws of the Commonwealth and states and the impact of international conventions as they affect employee relations;
7. Critically analyse the debates surrounding change to the Australian employee relations system since the 1980s;
8. Demonstrate a range of employment relations research techniques.
ContentThe content of this course includes but is not limited to the following topics:

1. The nature of employment relations
2. Industrial conflict
3. Management and employer organisations
4. Employee voice, consultation, representation and trade unions
5. The role of the state
6. Sources of regulation, constitutional arrangements and the impact of international standards
7. Federal system and the Fair Work Act
8. Processes and outcomes of enterprise bargaining.
9. Unfair and unlawful dismissal and remedies
