The course develops an understanding of qualitative methods in research. It is designed to provide students with knowledge and skills in preparation for the conduct of qualitative research by focusing on the assumptions and logic underlying the planning, conduct and writing up of qualitative research. The course also emphasises the appropriateness of different research strategies and the technical features of specific research methods and design.

ObjectivesOn successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Critically evaluate the place of qualitative research in relation to possible research strategies in business research.
2. Describe and debate the underlying assumptions and logic of qualitative methods.
3. Outline the major ethical issues involved in qualitative research.
4. Plan and implement a qualitative research design.
5. Draw upon a repertoire of qualitative methods to meet the needs of a research design.
6. Conduct qualitative data analysis and interpretation
7. Develop, present and defend a written qualitative research methodology proposal, dissertation or paper.
8. Appraise critically the qualitative research of others.
